Incense censer representing "Macuixóchitl" These... - Lot 82 - Castor Hara
Incense censer representing "Macuixóchitl" These figures, often referred to as "Xantil", are representative of the region between Oaxaca and Puebla. They consist of a cylindrical part forming the body from which the arms and legs bent to the side emerge. The elbows rest on the knees and the arms are adorned with green bracelets. The face is adorned with body paintings with symbolic resonances and the mouth opens onto a row of teeth. It is the deity "Macuixóchitl", a name that means "Five Flowers" in Aztec. This avatar of the god Xochipili (god of flowers and vegetation) is richly adorned. Green circular earrings with scrolls adorn his ears and a high headdress consists of a large knot with four bands, held in the centre by a green medallion, with motifs similar to those of the earrings. An arch formed by three circles surmounts the whole. On the back, the headdress ends in a fin that covers the nape of the neck. This brazier was used to burn copal, whose thick smoke escaped through a hole in the mouth and shoulders, thus favouring communication with the gods.
